Warns Council Chairmen Against, Says Touch The Money And Go To JailLG Funds
The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, has issued a stern warning to local government chairmen across Nigeria, cautioning them against mismanaging or looting public funds.
Fagbemi emphasized that the autonomy granted to Local Governments by the Supreme Court is intended to empower grassroots development, not to line private pockets.
“If they choose to tamper with public funds and fail to deliver on their constitutional mandates, they risk going to jail. The trust placed in them must not be betrayed,”
Fagbemi stated at the 2024 annual conference of the National Association of Judiciary correspondents in Abuja.
Fagbemi urged LG officials to prioritize their constitutional duties, ensuring that primary education, quality healthcare, and sustainable welfare programs are accessible to all. He also criticized state governments that undermine local government autonomy, referencing Supreme Court rulings that mandate financial and administrative independence for local governments.
“Any debt incurred by local governments must align with their constitutional functions. Projects like building airports, which are outside their scope, will not be tolerated,” Fagbemi asserted.
The AGF commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for its commitment to strengthening governance structures at all levels.
He emphasized the importance of transparency, accountability, and good governance, warning that the era of impunity is over.
“Good governance is a collaborative effort, and every tier of government must be held accountable,” Fagbemi said.
Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, echoed Fagbemi’s sentiments, highlighting the critical roles of the media and judiciary in promoting transparency and accountability.
“I must emphasize the importance of credible journalism in strengthening public trust in the judiciary. Your work is integral to fostering a transparent and accountable judiciary,” Justice Kekere-Ekun said.
