TASUED On Track To Enjoy 24-Hour Electricity …As Student Leaders Undergo Leadership Training

The era of inconsistent power supply at the Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun campus, Ogun State, is drawing to a close, as Vice-Chancellor Prof. Oluwole Banjo announced during an interactive session with the Students’ Union leadership at a 2-day Capacity Training held at the Ilaji Resort Center in Akanran, Ibadan, Oyo State.

Prof. Banjo assured TASUEDITIES that within a few months, they would have access to uninterrupted 24-hour power supply, highlighting the significance of a fully functional institution where students can utilize libraries and labs round the clock.

This year’s theme, “Building A Future Leader,” underscores the importance of academic institutions in equipping students with the skills to effectively address the nation’s challenges.

Commending the student leaders for maintaining peace on campus, Prof. Banjo encouraged them to promote inclusive governance and unity, while also mentioning enhancements in campus security, including the renovation of the Police Post at Abapawa and collaboration with the Nigerian Civil Defence Corps to bolster security measures.

Mr. Tade Adenugba, the Deputy Registrar of Human Resources, stressed the importance of students acquainting themselves with university protocols and channels for addressing grievances, urging them to refer to the university handbook for guidance.

Addressing security concerns, Acting Chief Security Officer Mr. Moses Ogundeji emphasized the role of student leaders in ensuring a secure environment and cautioned against behaviors that could compromise campus safety, including association with criminal elements.

Furthermore, the issue of drug addiction among youths was tackled by Chief Superintendent of Narcotics, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mutiat Okuwobi, who highlighted the necessity of collaborative efforts to combat substance abuse among students, while pointing out the dire consequences of drug addiction.

Other speakers at the event included former Secretary of the Academic Staff Union of Universities and former President of ASUU, Prof. Rotimi Ettu, who discussed “Students’ Leaders and Absolute Power,” cautioning participants against autocratic tendencies and urging them to garner the support of their constituents to leave a lasting legacy of service.

Similarly, the immediate past Dean of Students Affairs and the current Dean of the College of Information and Science Technology (COSIT), Prof. Oluseye Adejoye, elaborated on the history of student unionism in Nigeria and emphasized the importance of responsible leadership.

He advised participants to advocate for students’ interests, avoid affiliations with unregistered organisations, respect other branches of governance, and prioritize dialogue in engagements with university management.

In response, the Senate President Afolabi Olusola Showemimo, speaking on behalf of the Students’ Union Leaders, commended the university management for organizing the training and pledged their support for peace and a smooth academic calendar.

Acting Dean of Students’ Affairs, Dr. Olawale Ahmed Moliki then commended the participants for being exemplary ambassadors of TASUED.

A gala night followed, marking the conclusion of the training exercises, providing an opportunity for participants to network.

The event was attended by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olarenwaju Adeogun, the Registrar, Mr. Dapo Oke fcia, the Bursar, Mr. Kabir Ogunneye, the Sub Dean of Students’ Affairs, Dr. Yinka Adediran, the Students’ Affairs Officer, Mr. Niyi Olaitan, and Mr. Jimi Oloja, among others.
