Rivers LG Election: There’s Need To Amend Electoral Act-Uche Nnamdi

The local government election held in Rivers State on Saturday October 5, 2024, may have come and gone, but the issues surrounding the election have continued to attract comments from lovers of democracy, who see them as threats to the nation’s democracy.
In a statement released on Sunday by an analyst, Dr. Uche Nnamdi, it was indicated that the election was done without the participation of the security agencies, though this was said to be a result of a court order on the election.
Dr Nnamdi then suggested that there is need to implement the electoral act, adding that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should implement it in the 2027 general elections.
Another shocker in the election, as revealed by Dr Nnamdi, was the fact that it was organised without the mandatory INEC voters’ register.
Dr Nnamdi stated that all electoral materials; sensitive and non sensitive, were distributed from Rivers State government House, while Action Peoples Party (APP) sponsored 23 local government chairmanship  candidates and 319 councillorship candidates.
The Labour Party (LP) and the Young Peoples Party (YPP) were said to have sponsored about 30 percent of the required candidates for the 23 local government areas and 319 wards.
“The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission conducted elections in 2,405 polling units out of the total 6,866 polling units, yet they declared winners in all wards and local government areas.
“There was nothing like the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and  RSIEC recruited all adhoc staff from a list submitted by Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
“Governor Fubara moved all electoral materials; sensitive and non sensitive to the Rivers State government House and distributed all materials through the APP chairmanship candidates,” Dr Nnamdi said.
He also alleged that the voters didn’t use any voter’s card to cast their votes.
As stated earlier, Rivers State has 6,866 polling units. Out of the 2,405 polling units where elections were conducted, the average voter turnout was 8 voters per polling unit.
This, he said, gives an average of 19,204 voters who voted in the election.
“Recall that Rivers State has 3,215,273 registered voters, there were no accreditation, no ward and LGA collations and no electronic transmission of results.
“And I hear intelligent Nigerians, including Dele Momodu and Atiku Abubakar’s aide, say the local government election in Rivers State was the best in the history of this country.
“I therefore wish to call the attention of our National Assembly to adopt Governor Fubara’s model as strict amendments to the electoral act and ensure INEC implements it in the 2027 general elections,” he said.
