A former Super Eagles player, Mutiu Adepoju, has called on the Federal Government and other agencies to promote sports development as a means of discovering new talents that can make the country proud in the future.
He stated this during the 18th edition of Research Institutes Games Association of Nigeria (RIGAN), which was hosted by the Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria (CRIN) at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium Ibadan, Oyo State.
The headmaster, as he is fondly called, stated that sports, apart from promoting unity and friendship, is also a means of improving one’s health status and physical fitness.
In his welcome speech at the event, the National president of RIGAN, Professor Oluwaferanmi Fortune Owolade identified funding as a major setback in putting the programme together due to its non-inclusion in the annual budget of the Federal Ministry of Sports.
Professor Owolade added that the use of mercenaries by any institution will not be tolerated and that defaulters shall be severely punished, while also urging the officials not to be partial.
“RIGAN comprises 30 Research and Development (R&D) Institutes under the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Science and Technology, Health, Transport, Education, Environment, Youth and Sports,” he said.
He stated that the institutes are not only involved in solving medical veterinary, industrial, scientific, agricultural and any other technical problems, but also  developing new technologies, policies and innovations.
In his address, the Executive Director of Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria (CRIN), Dr Patrick Adebola spoke on the importance of RIGAN, which he said has created an interactive platform, where research scientists and other officers across research and development organisations can exchange ideas under a relaxed and social atmosphere.
“This is healthy research and ultimately our nations economy,” he said.
Dr. Adebola however, expressed concern on continuity and called on all concerned authorities on RIGAN to embrace and support the vision.
The Executive Director of CRIN however, pleaded with all the participants on the shortcomings, saying that the event was solely financed by the Institute without any subvention from the Federal Government.
The take football match between CRIN vs ARMTI ended 1-0 in favour of CRIN.
