Residents of Okunland Raise Alarm Over Invasion by Dangerous Fulani Men and Kidnappers

Residents of Okunland, a region in Kogi State covering six local government areas—Ìjùmú, Kabba-Bunu, Yagba-West, Yagba-East, Mopa-Muro, and Lokoja—have expressed grave concerns over the growing invasion of their communities by armed Fulani men.
These invaders are allegedly involved in activities such as kidnapping, rape, and the destruction of farmland, creating an atmosphere of fear and insecurity.
Sources from the area reported that the number of Fulani settlers has grown alarmingly.
In Bunuland, it is claimed that the Fulani population now almost exceeds that of the native inhabitants, while Oworoland is said to be completely overrun.
“In the villages around Obajana, people can hardly sleep with their two eyes closed because kidnapping has become a daily occurrence,” a source lamented.
The source further highlighted the presence of idle young Fulani men, often seen riding motorcycles without any visible means of livelihood.
“This is a crisis situation. If we do not act now, we risk losing our ancestral lands to a systematic, well-coordinated, and orchestrated takeover,” the source added.
Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo of the state is reportedly aware of the situation and has taken steps to address the issue.
One such measure is the recent ban on mining in Kogi State, which was aimed at discouraging the influx of foreigners and reducing criminal activities.
However, residents alleged that instead of leaving, some of the individuals affected by the ban have turned to crime, further exacerbating the insecurity in the area.
Community members have reportedly made efforts to address the crisis, but have been largely unsuccessful.
They are now urging both the state and federal governments to intervene swiftly before the situation spirals further out of control.
“We need urgent action. The safety of our people and the preservation of our heritage are at stake,” a source appealed.
The residents’ plea underscores the urgent need for enhanced security measures in Okunland to restore peace and protect lives and property.
