Some residents of Ajah Community in Lagos State have staged a peaceful protest to the Governor’s office with a Save Our Soul (SOS) message to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the state over alleged planned imposition of a member of the Olumegbon family as the new Ajah traditional ruler.
The residents had on November 28, staged a peaceful protest to the Lagos State House of Assembly for its intervention.
Mr Kazeem Odunlami, the General Secretary of Ajah Community, who led hundreds of protesters to the Governor’s office on Monday, said that the residents of the area require urgent intervention of the governor on the matter.
Odunlami said that what the Ajah residents were clamouring for was the intervention of the Governor Sanwo-Olu to stop the planned imposition to prevent any form of conflict in the community.
“We are today, December 9 2024, to make our submission and solidarity with our people in Ajah before our Governor.
“He is never tired. He is not a Governor that always rest. He works round the clock.
“We pray to Almighty Allah to grant him a successful and peaceful tenure in the state because he talks and do.
“We are here to protest in order to let the Governor know about the planned imposition of a member of Olumegbon family as the traditional ruler in Ajah community.
“We don’t want the Governor to listen to misleading misinformation on the ownership of Ajah.
“We all know that the state government is so staunch about law, the Governor supports and believes in the rule of law. That is why Lagos State is known as the centre of excellence.
“In a situation, where there is no rule of  law,  there will be a state of anarchy.
When a state of anarchy emerges, there will be no peace.
“We are calling on the state government to save our soul from this imposition to avoid communal clashes in Ajah community.
“All the families of Ajah say no to the super imposition of Olumegbon Family as the ruler of Ajah Community, Ajah Community seeks for Peace.
“Olumegbon has never ruled Ajah community from time immemorial, it will not change now. For over 300years, Baale has been the one ruling Ajah community and that is our culture and tradition,”  he said.
The General Secretary then appealed to the Governor to take a bold step and act promptly to save the community from imposition.
He noted that under the state’s customs and traditions, the chieftaincy title of Olumegbon of Lagos was not associated with the rulership of Ajah community.
Odulami said that the only recognised chieftaincy in Ajah since the colonial days was the Baale (Olomodi) of Ajah, adding that Olumegbon has no historical or judicial background to become the Oba of Ajah.
Odunlami said that Ajah Community would never accept the rulership of Ajah by Olumegbon family since the family has never ruled the land from time immemorial.
Addressing the protesters, Mr Ayodeji Haruna, Director, Office of Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement, Lagos State, urged the protesters to remain calm, while their request would be brought before the state Governor.
Haruna stated that the matter would be treated promptly by the governor.
“I am not the authority in this matter, but  ‘am assuring you that the issue will not be swept under the carpet, it will be resolved and attended to by the governor.
“In the meantime, we have heard you and we are happy that you staged a peaceful protest to the state house to seek the intervention of the government and very soon, the matter will be attended to,” he said.
