FTwo residents of a house on Adejiyan Street in the Amukoko area of Lagos State have been arrested by the police for unlawfully tapping electricity from their neighbour after they were being disconnected for non-payment of bills.

It was learnt that the suspects, 37-year-old Alfa Saheed Momodu and Hammed Adebayo (26), who shared the same flat in the compound, tapped the electricity from their neighour, identified only as Tunde.

We gathered that their apartment was cut off after they failed to pay a sum apportioned to them as their electricity bill for one year.

It was said that they had been thriving on the illegal connection for months before Tunde discovered their ploy, having barged into their flat around 8pm on February 3. Our correspondent learnt further that whenever Tunde put on his generator, the suspects also cashed in on the connection to power some of their electronics.

The incident was said to have been reported at the Amuko Police Station.

They were charged to an Apapa Magistrate’s Court sitting in Ajegunle with two counts of stealing and unlawful power connection.

The charges read, “That you, Alfa Saheed Momodu and Hammed Adebayo, on February 3, 2015, at about 8pm, on Adejiyan Street, Amukoko, in the Apapa Magisterial District, did conspire felony to wit; stealing, and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.

“That you, on the same date, time and place in the aforementioned magisterial district, did unlawfully interfere with electricity company property by illegally connecting light for your use after being disconnected for non-payment for a period of one year and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 338 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.”

The accused persons, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

They were granted bail in the sum of N20,000 with one surety in like sum by the magistrate, P. A. Adekomaya, who adjourned the case till April 6, 2015.
