Police Detain 97 Shiites Following Abuja Clash
The Nigeria Police Force has arrested 97 members of the banned Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), commonly known as Shiites, for prosecution after a violent confrontation in Abuja on Sunday.
The clash resulted in the deaths of two police officers and left three others seriously injured. Additionally, three patrol vehicles were set on fire by the Shiites during the incident.
Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, stated on Monday in Abuja that the arrests were made based on reliable intelligence reports. He emphasized that the directive from Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun will be fully implemented.
Adejobi noted that the IGP has reiterated the police force’s commitment to apprehending other individuals involved in the attack and ensuring justice. He stressed the IGP’s resolve to combat any form of anarchy and maintain order across the country.
The police spokesman condemned the killings of officers as outrageous and unacceptable, describing the perpetrators as enemies of peace. He assured that the ongoing investigation aims to uncover the full extent of the attack and prevent similar violence in the future.
Adejobi also conveyed the IGP’s condolences to the families of the deceased officers and wished those receiving treatment a speedy recovery.
