The management of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, has denied media reports that a final year student of the Department of English, Grace Opeyemi Dara, committed suicide because of her poor grades.

Grace reportedly drank Sniper and died on August 2nd.

The spokesman of the University, Abiodun Olarewaju, in a statement released on Monday August 5th, said Dara’s academic record was not bad to warrant her committing suicide.

According to Olanrewaju, Dara was residing off-campus and that she first took the sniper on April 22.  The security unit of the institution laterwent to her house, took her to the university health centre where she was referred to the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex for better treatment.

“She was treated and discharged home to her parents. She was brought back to the hospital by her parents and readmitted at the Intensive Care Unit of the OAUTHC last Thursday, 1st of August and she unfortunately died the next day.

Miss Dara is on a Cummulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.68 which qualified her, at least, to be an average student on a 2 – 2 class of grade. It is, therefore, our firm belief that a student who was on Second Class (Lower Division) cannot be said to be poor academically, talk less of committing suicide because of such,” he said.
