President Bola Tinubu has appointed Nwakuche Ndidi as the acting controller-general of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS).
Dada Olusegun, Special Assistant on Social Media to the President, confirmed the appointment to TheCable on Friday.
Ndidi will succeed Haliru Nababa, the outgoing CG, who bowed out of service on Thursday.
Nababa was appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari in February 2021.
In an earlier statement, Ja’afaru Ahmed, secretary of the civil defence, correctional, fire, and immigration board, said Ndidi’s appointment will take effect from December 15, 2024.
“The President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has graciously approved the appointment of Nwakuche Sylvester Ndidi as Acting Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service following the expiration of the tenure of Haliru Nababa. His appointment takes effect from December 15, 2024,” the statement reads.
“Nwakuche, born on November 26, 1966, hails from Oguta in Imo State. Until his appointment, he was the Deputy Controller-General in charge of the Training and Staff Development Directorate. He is a fellow of the prestigious National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies and holds the national honour of Member of the Federal Republic.
“The President further enjoined him to bring his wealth of experience to bear in his new capacity.”
’WELL-EARNED RETIREMENT’
Speaking on the retirement of Nababa, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the minister of interior, commended the outgoing CG for his “remarkable” leadership and commitment to service.
Tunji-Ojo said Nababa’s tenure was marked by significant achievements in the NCoS.
“As you close this chapter of distinguished service and step into a well-earned retirement, we celebrate your numerous achievements, and the positive impact you have made on countless lives,” Tunji-Ojo said.
“On behalf of President Bola Tinubu, I wish you a happy and fulfilling retirement, filled with good health and prosperity.
“I am confident that your legacy would continue to inspire and motivate the NCoS community.”
