Man Sentenced to Life for Kidnapping, Sexual Assault of 10-Year-Old Girl in Northridge
A man found guilty of dozens of felony counts for kidnapping and sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl after breaking into her Northridge home in 2013 was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole plus more than 230 years to life in prison, Thursday.
Jurors in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom found Tobias Dustin Summers, 34, guilty of more than 30 felony counts in the case on Sept. 4.
Summers was convicted on 11 counts of oral copulation or sexual penetration with a child 10 or under; seven counts of aggravated assault of a child: oral copulation; four counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child: sexual penetration; and two counts of sex or sodomy with a child 10 or under.
Summers was also convicted of one count each of: kidnapping; first-degree burglary; kidnapping to commit rape; forcible lewd act upon a child; aggravated sexual assault of a child: rape; aggravated sexual assault of a child: sodomy; using a minor for a sex act and possession of matter depicting a minor engaging in sexual conduct.
Summers entered the victim’s Northridge home on March 27, 2013 while his accomplice Daniel Martinez waited outside in a car.
After Summers emerged from the house with the girl, Martinez drove them a short distance before exiting the vehicle.
Summers then drove the car to numerous locations where he sexually assaulted the girl, according to evidence presented in court.
During the kidnapping, the victim made mental note of the various locations, which she later used to help police find evidence that helped convict Summers, the prosecutor said.
Law enforcement began searching for the girl when her mother reported her missing shortly after she was taken from the home.
The search ended about 12 hours later when the girl was found barefoot and visibly injured at the intersection of Canoga Avenue and Oxnard Street in Woodland Hills.
Summers was captured on April 24 about 200 miles south of the U.S. border in Mexico.
Before issuing the sentence, the judge heard testimony from the victim and her father.
Martinez was convicted Nov. 7 of one count of first-degree burglary, person present, and sentenced to six years in state prison, according to the district attorney’s office.
