Lawyer Urges Police To Wade Into Controversy Over Transformer Donated To Community In Ojodu By Lawmaker

A Lagos lawyer has written a petition to the Area G Police Command in Lagos on behalf of her client, the Suratau Sadiku Family, alleging trespass to land, breach of public peace and assault on their land and property situated at No. 16, Ogunusi Road, Akiode Ojodu, Lagos.

The petition, written by Citi Lawyers, was dated September 14, 2023.
The petition, signed by Adebimpe Olatemiju (Esq), Barrister, Solicitors and Notary Public, was entitled; “Re:Trespass To Land, Breach of Public Peace, Conduct Likely To Breach Public Peace And Assault.”
It was stated in the petition that some shops and apartments in the property are given to tenants under a landlord/tenancy relationship.
The lawyer added that it was recently observed that some individuals intend to install a transformer on a portion of their land, which they vehemently resisted and also lodged a criminal complaint at the Ojodu Police Station.
“That the individual/group involved stopped for awhile, but presently they have launched a heavy come back to install the transformer on our land despite our resistance.
“That the installation of the transformer will cause serious health and environmental hazard to both the tenants and the occupants of the property,” the petition read.
It was suggested  that the transformer could be installed in a safe place around the vicinity without any hazard to the occupants and children in  the environment.
They then implored the Area Commander to “use your good office to investigate this oppressive and deadly action of some individuals to our client as nobody is above the law.”
The crisis reportedly started, when some  community leaders, including the Baale (local head) of the community, decided to erect a transformer donated to them by the lawmaker representing Ikeja Constituency 2 in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Adedamola Richard Kasunmu, close to the said property.
Investigations revealed that part of the pillars of the cables of the transformer would extend to the property and block one of the stair cases.
Contrary to the claim of the community that Hon. Kasunmu directed that the transformer should be erected at the said location, it was gathered that the location was suggested by some of the community leaders, which Suratau Sadiku Family reportedly resisted all to no avail.
A source close to Suratau Sadiku Family revealed that the decision to situate the property in the location was taken at a meeting where no member of the family was invited, adding that members of the community turned down their objection to the decision of the community on the matter afterwards.
“It was like a gang-up against the Suratau Sadiku Family. There are several other places, where the transformer could be situated in the area. They just wanted to punish the family for no tangible reason.
“The transformer would prevent some traders occupying the shops in the property from doing their businesses. It is also an eyesore and it poses health hazard and danger to the occupants of the area,” a source said.
The leaders of the community and members of the Suratau Sadiku Family were said to have been summoned to Area G Police Command, but the matter was yet to settle as at the time of this report.
