Lagos Speaker, Mojisola Lawal-Meranda, Set to Resign …Chief Whip, Setonji, May Emerge as New Speaker
The ongoing crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly is reaching its peak as the incumbent Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lawal-Meranda, prepares to step down.
Sources indicated that this development followed high-level meetings among leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC), with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu reportedly insisting that the speakership should be zoned to Lagos West.
Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lawal-Meranda, representing Apapa Constituency 1, was appointed Speaker following the removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa in what was described as a “palace coup” on January 13, 2025.
Obasa was ousted while he was in the United States, amid allegations of maladministration and misappropriation of funds.
Now, sources revealed that the current Chief Whip of the Assembly, Hon. Setonji David, representing Badagry Constituency 1, is being considered as the new Speaker.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu insisted that the speakership should not remain in Lagos Central, as that would be politically unwise. He directed that Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lawal-Meranda step down so that the position could go to someone from Lagos West.
“It was then agreed that either the Chief Whip, Hon. Setonji David from Badagry Constituency 1, or Hon. Age Sulaimon from Amuwo Odofin Constituency 2 should take over as the new Speaker. Party leaders held high-level discussions with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu over the weekend and concluded that it would be best for the Speaker to step down voluntarily, allowing someone from Lagos West to assume the position,” a source disclosed
Additionally, it was gathered that former Speaker Obasa may be given a “soft landing” and asked to step aside rather than being forcibly removed.
While this development has yet to be officially confirmed, sources suggested that the announcement is expected today, Monday, and could be made public at any moment.
