Kekere-Ekun Set To Take Over As CJN  …As Ariwoola Retires August

Nigeria’s Chief Justice, Olukayode Ariwoola, will statutorily retire next month, on his 70th birthday, the retirement age for Nigerian judges.

Expectedly however, Justice Ariwoola will be succeeded (in acting capacity, initially) by the most senior Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Motonmori Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun, CFR.

It will now be up to the National Judicial Council (NJC) to recommend a substantive CJN to the President for nomination for confirmation by the National Assembly.

Following precedent, the most senior JSC succeeds an outgoing CJN in substantive capacity.

However, Justice Taslim Elias (CJN 1972-1975) was not on the Supreme Court when he was appointed CJN in 1972.

He was serving as the Federal Attorney-General and also Professor of Law and Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Lagos, UNILAG—when he was appointed CJN.

He went on to become the first African President of the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
