Kalu Faces N7.1 Billion Theft Charges On Tuesday
Senate Chief whip and erstwhile governor of Abia State, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu is to appear before a Federal High Court Abuja to stand trial over an alleged theft of N7.1 billion belonging to the Abia State Government.
The funds were allegedly stolen when Kalu served as governor of the state between 1999 and 2007.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, which is prosecuting the former governor had earlier arraigned Kalu on the same charges and won a conviction at the Federal High Court, Lagos.
Kalu was sentenced to 12 years in jail after he was found guilty on the same charge. His sentence was, however, overturned by the Supreme Court which held that the trial judge who sentenced him, Justice Mohammed Idris had been lifted to the Court of Appeal at the time he passed the judgment.
The apex court had as such ordered that the trial be retried de novo under a new judge.
However, unlike the first trial which took place in Lagos, the new trial is to take place in Abuja.
Kalu was investigated by the EFCC and was alleged to have embezzled the N7.1 billion while he served as governor of Abia State.
