JUST IN: Ghana Police Arrest Over 100 Amid Post-Election Violence, Protests

The police in Ghana have arrested over 100 people, mainly opposition supporters of President-elect John Mahama, for engaging in acts of lawlessness following the country’s recent elections.

Protesters, frustrated by delays in announcing election results and disagreements over parliamentary outcomes, attacked state institutions, looted properties, and caused disturbances, including setting fire to two electoral commission offices.

Mahama condemned the violence, urging President Akufo-Addo and security agencies to take decisive action. The unrest reflects Ghana’s “winner-takes-all” political culture, where supporters of the winning party often demand jobs and office vacancies before the new president takes office.

The police have warned against further violence, while the Ghanaian army has cautioned the public against disarming soldiers. Catholic bishops have also condemned the violence, calling for peace and responsibility from political leaders. Mahama, who won with a significant margin, is set to be sworn in on January 7, 2025.
