In a series of successful anti-smuggling operations, Forward Operating Base (FOB), Badagry, Lagos intercepted and seized large quantities of illegally transported petroleum products and contraband items intended for smuggling into Benin Republic.
On March 7, 2025, at approximately 10:20pm, personnel of FOB Badagry raided Oulak Filling Station near Badagry Market Junction, where smugglers were loading petroleum products into jerry cans.
The operation led to the seizure of 131 jerry cans (30 liters each) and 71 jerry cans (40 liters each), totaling approximately 6,770 liters of petrol, along with 188 empty jerry cans.
These were contained in a statement by FOB, which was made available to the media on Sunday.
The perpetrators fled upon sighting security forces, leaving the contraband behind.
The seized items were secured at the base for further action.
Similarly, on March 8, 2025, intelligence led to another successful operation at Farasime Community, where personnel discovered 40 jerry cans (25 liters each), totaling 1,000 liters of petrol, abandoned by smugglers attempting to transport them across the border.
The confiscated items were transferred to FOB Badagry for further handling.
To prevent the recirculation of seized illegal petroleum products, a destruction exercise was carried out on March 11, 2025, where 318 jerry cans of petrol confiscated from various smuggling attempts were destroyed at the base.
On March 14, 2025, at 00:15 hours, a swift operation was conducted at Bollington Beach following credible intelligence of petroleum products being smuggled via wooden boats.
The team discovered 234 jerry cans (25 liters each), totaling 5,850 liters of petrol, abandoned by smugglers who fled the scene. The contraband was seized and transported to the base for appropriate action.
Later that same day, at 02:54 hours, FOB Badagry launched a targeted operation along the Badagry-Porto Novo Creek waterway to apprehend smugglers.
While the suspects initially evaded capture, the land patrol unit successfully intercepted 71 bags of smuggled rice at 03:30 hours.
The smugglers abandoned the goods and fled, leaving the contraband to be secured by security personnel.
“These operations demonstrates FOB’s commitment to the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechuckwu Ogalla Strategic directive  06-2023, which amongst others  is focused on combatting smuggling activities in Nigeria’s maritime domain particularly in Badagry – Porto Novo Creek  and its immediate environs.
“Accordingly, all perpetrators of smuggling and other illegal activities are hereby warned that FOB will not relent in its effort to dismantle smuggling networks in Badagry and its immediate environ. Anyone caught engaging in these unlawful acts will face the full wrath of the law,” the statement read.
