The Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo has signed into law the Kidnapping Prohibition (Amendment) Law 2025, introducing stricter measures to combat kidnapping within the state.
The amendment enhances the provisions of the 2013 law, aiming to deter criminal activities and ensure the safety of all residents.
The amended law states there will be death penalty for convicted kidnappers.  Individuals found guilty of kidnapping will face the death sentence, which underscores the government’s commitment to eradicating the heinous crime.
It also recommended confiscation and demolition of properties as any property used in the act of kidnapping will be seized and demolished by the state government. This measure aims to disrupt the operational bases of criminal elements.
There will be severe penalties for accomplices. Individuals who aid or abet kidnappers will also face the death penalty, with their assets confiscated and properties demolished. This provision seeks to dismantle networks supporting kidnapping activities.
It was added in a statement that signing the Kidnapping Prohibition (Amendment) Law 2025,  “Senator Monday Okpebholo has demonstrated bold, decisive, and people-focused leadership, ensuring that criminals face the full weight of the law.”
The statement added that the action reflects the Governor’s practical governance approach—where policies are not just made but enforced to deliver real impact.
“With strong political will and a clear vision, his administration is setting a new standard for leadership that prioritizes security, stability, and prosperity for all,” the statement read.
