Deji Adeyanju Retracts Defamatory Statements, Apologizes To PDP Leaders
Deji Adeyanju, a human rights activist, has issued a public apology and retraction of his previous defamatory statements against Ambassador Umar Damagum, the Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the National Secretary.
Adeyanju had alleged that Damagum and Anyanwu were serving tea and kilishi at the residence of Femi Gbajabiamila, the Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu.
However, he now claims that his words were taken out of context.
The initial allegations sparked widespread condemnation from Nigerians who recognized Damagum’s impeccable character. Following a demand for retraction and apology from Damagum and Anyanwu through their counsel, Adeyanju has now retracted his claims and apologized publicly.
Damagum’s decision to address the issue through a socially acceptable channel demonstrates his commitment to upholding his reputation and the principles of justice within the law and societal acceptance.
By seeking accountability, Damagum has set a strong precedent for those who may be tempted to spread false information.
Damagum and Anyanwu had threatened to sue Adeyanju over the defamatory statements.
The PDP leaders’ counsel, Johnson Usman, SAN, had demanded an immediate retraction of the statements and a public apology within three days .
Adeyanju’s apology and retraction are seen as a victory for Damagum and Anyanwu, who have been vindicated by the activist’s admission of wrongdoing.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible speech and the need to hold individuals accountable for spreading false information.
