As part of efforts being put in place by the Federal Government to end the incessant clashes between herdsmen and farmers, a Local Organising Committee has been inaugurated ahead of a national conference on livestock.

The committee is saddled with the responsibility of designing implementable structures to check the attacks and increase cattle breeding in the country.

Speaking during the inauguration, which took place in Abuja on Wednesday, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Audu Ogbeh said the committee would ensure that cattle would no longer be found roaming across the country.

Ogbeh said, “The need to keep our cattle in secured colonies will afford us the opportunities to curtail the incessant farmers/herdsmen clashes as well as embark on systematic cattle breed improvement.”

According to the minister, transforming grazing reserves into ranches was as a result of the recommendations of a three-day stakeholders’ policy dialogue that was held in Kaduna in April this year.

He urged the committee to consider the Kaduna recommendations while organising the national conference on livestock, and agree on sustainable solutions.

Ogbeh also thanked members of the committee for their commitment to the sustainable development of the livestock sub-sector.

Chairman of the committee, Dr. Gidion Mshebwala assured Ogbeh that members will adopt their collective skills and experience to organise the conference.
