COVID-19 cases reach 30m globally — but 22m have recovered
According to Worldometers, global statistics platform, the COVID-19 infections globally reached 30,026,460 after over 300,000 cases were recorded in the last 24 hours.
However, only 7.2 million of the total cases representing 24 percent are still active.
Out of the 30 million so far infected with the virus, 21.8 million (72.6 percent) have recovered while 945,322 (3.1 percent) have died.
The United States, which is the worst-hit country, comprises 22.6 percent of the total infections; it has so far recorded 6.8 million cases, out of which 201,000 have died.
Asia has overtaken North America as the continent with the highest number of cases mainly as a result of the spike in infections recorded in India.
It currently has nine million coronavirus cases, with India accounting for five million of them; 170,000 of the patients in the continent have so far died while 7.2 million have recovered.Advertisement
Out of the 1.38 million infections so far recorded in Africa, 33,300 (2.4 percent) have died while 1.1 million (80 percent) have recovered.
As of Wednesday night, Nigeria has recorded 56,604 coronavirus cases but only 7,641, representing 13.5 percent of them are still active; at least 1,091 have died while 47,872 have been discharged after recovering.
