The Minority Leader of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Hakeem Bello has said that the corruption allegations against former governor Babatunde Raji Fashola was political.

Reacting to the reports indicting the former governor of inflating contract sums and awarding phoney contracts, Bello said that the same scenario would have played out if he were to be pencilled down as a minister.

“People would come up with allegations against me that I embezzled money and all that. Where were they, when former governor Babatunde Fashola was awarding the contracts. If we don’t forget about the issue of corruption and move on, the state would not move forward.

“They should forget about the scandal. In 2011, there were a lot of scandal against Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, when he was about to be appointed as a minister from Lagos State under the PDP government then,” he said.

The Minority Leader added that rather than referring the former governor to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for probe, he should be made to face a disciplinary panel.

“It is all political, if they want to appoint you as a commissioner today, people would come up with stories against you. The whole thing is politics and it is normal if people are to be given appointment,” he said.

The lawmaker then urged Lagos residents to forget the matter and allow Fashola to be made a minister, adding that during the time of the late president Umar Yar’Adua, there were scandals against Demola Seriki, when he was to be made a minister of the federal republic.
