AFCON: Champions Senegal Out Of Tournament
The drama in the Africa Cup of Nations reached its peak on Monday night as hosts Cote d’Ivoire rose from the brink of elimination to scale a formidable hurdle by Senegal and moved into the quarter-finals.
In a tension soaked encounter, the first time since Mali 2002 that a defending champion faced the host, Cote d’Ivoire continued to survive as Senegal’s initial 1-0 lead was cut off late into the game when Cote d’Ivoire got a life-saving penalty kick that restored parity at 1-1.
The hosts were perfect in the penalty shoot-out that followed the extra time. An so, for the sixth consecutive time since 2010, a defending champion has failed to make it to the last eight.
