Lagos Reaffirms Commitment To Build Lekki International Airport Despite Delay
The Lagos State Government has reiterated its dedication to constructing the Lekki International Airport, despite a two-year delay.
According to the state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, no litigation is hindering the project’s progress.
“All necessary documents are with the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria for the commencement of the airport,” Omotoso stated.
The Federal Government approved the construction of the airport on October 10, 2022, with the facility expected to serve approximately five million passengers annually from the Lekki, Ajah, and Epe areas of Lagos State.
The airport project, which will be financed through a public-private partnership, has garnered interest from several investors.
Omotoso emphasized that the project’s completion timeline is flexible, as it depends on securing funding.
“We are not going to finance it from our balance sheet. It is something that will be done through public-private partnerships. It is not something that one can fix the completion at a particular time.
“You still have to raise the funding,” Omotoso explained.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has prioritized the Lekki International Airport project, promising to deliver it before the end of his tenure.
The airport is expected to complement the Murtala Muhammed Airport and serve as a catalyst for economic growth in the Lekki area.
