Boxing: Former Reps Member Canvasses Grassroots Sports Ministry

Hon.Taiwo Kolawole, a former member of the Federal House of Representatives has canvassed for Grassroots Sports Ministry to discover new talents in sport.
Kolawole gave the disclosure on Sunday at the Annual Boxing Competition organised by the Chairman of Agbado-Okeodo Community Development Committee (CDC), Mr Olabowale Kasunmu.
The former reps member said that the new talent needed to be discovered to replace the old ones representing the country both locally and internationally.
“This is what we ought to be doing, if we don’t do this, there’s no way we can have an end to this challenges in the sport.
“And it’s one way by which we can even provide employment, even before the election. I value this opinion where we create a Grassroots Sport Ministry, where new and young talents can be discovered to represent the country at all time,,” he said.
According to him, we are wasting away a whole lots of employment in sports because of our carelessness.
Kolawole urged the state government to look into establishing the Grassroots Sports Ministry to pave way for incoming sport talents in various communities.
“That’s one thing that the state government should do, a grassroots sports ministry that will liaise with all the local governments within the state to hunt for new generations.
“At the same time, encourage them to do things like, spend good money on Boxing, football, tennis and other games and in this process, you see them coming out in their different colours in special ways,” he said.
Prince Kolawole Olusegun, a former Director of Sports in Lagos State, also commended the boxing competition saying the state government was working tirelessly to discover more talents in all games of sport.
“Very soon, I know that great talents will be discovered in this competition as we can see various categories of boxers here in this gathering, the state government will not hesitate to sponsor any outstanding talents to greater levels,” he said.
Mr David Famuyiwa, the Executive Chairman Agbado-Okeodo Local Council Development Area (LCDA) also said in his remarks that the competition has helped a lot of talents in the community.
According to him, the council will not relent in his contributions towards the success of the tourney annually.
Pastor Samuel Opajobi, the Community Development Committee Chairman of Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government, also commended the boxing competition urged the state government to sponsor more of grassroots sports for talent discovery.
Kasunmu the organiser of the Competition, while given his remarks, said that organising boxing competition required more experience, finance and planning.
“We have been doing it for the past three years and we will not relent in helping this young talents discover their talents and showcase their skills.
“Some of them have represented their states in boxing at the various capacity, we hope government and other multinational companies in the private sector come to our aid for sponsorship.
“This young generation of boxers need serious sponsors to allow them enrich their talents and perform very well in the boxing at any level,” he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that nine out of 18 Light Fly weight win in there category while other categories were placed on exhibition to encourage more talents.
Gabriel Ilebari, one of the winners thanked God Almighty for his success saying he was happy to have won in his category.
Ilebari also thanked the organiser for giving him the opportunity to showcase his talent.
Also, Opeyemi Olalekan, also a winner in a female category thanked the organiser for organising the annual boxing competition which give them the platform to showcase their the talents.
“I am proud to be a boxer and ‘am hoping to go higher in future if there’s opportunity.
“We are appealing to the government to help us for sponsorship in all our trainings so that we can be able to represent our community, state and the country at large,” she said.
