Government has revealed that occupants living in makeshift shanties along the Ajao Estate Canal pay between N60,000 and N100,000 in rent.

This was made known today by Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, reports Nigerian Tribune.

According to Wahab, the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), popularly known as KAI, dismantled 138 shanties in the area as part of efforts to curb environmental violations and unlawful encroachment on public spaces.

He expressed concern over the high rental rates charged for these substandard dwellings, describing the situation as both exploitative and hazardous.

The commissioner further emphasised the state’s commitment to urban planning and public safety, warning that similar enforcement measures would soon be extended to other areas identified for illegal encampments.

He wrote, “In continuation of concerted measures to reduce the scourge of environmental infractions and illegal encampment in public spaces, the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) popularly known as KAI on Thursday demolished 138 shanties around the canal bank in Ajao Estate Canal where illegal occupants pays between N60,000 to N100,000 rent.”
