L-R Invited lecturer and Chief Imam of the Central Mosque Lekki, Sheikh Barr. Ridwan Jamiu, Speaker Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa and Dr. Sulaiman Bilahi, the Grand Mufti of Ilorin Emirate at the 15th Annual Hijrah Lecture organised by the Assembly

The two guest Lecturers at the 15th Annual Hijrah Lecture organised by the Lagos State House of Assembly, have urged Nigerians to embrace good morals for a better society.

Speaking at the event, with the theme; “The Increase Wave Of Moral Decadence In The Society,” which held at the Assembly Pavilion on Friday July 26, 2024, the speakers; Sheikh Dr Ridwanullah Jamiu and Sheikh (Dr) Sulaiman Faruq Onikijipa, OON, unanimously condemned the spate of moral decadence in the society.

This was just as the Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa urged religious leaders to preach impactful messages in places of worship.

The first lecturer, Sheikh Dr. Ridwanullah Jamiu said that there is need to enforce laws against BBNaija on the television and LGBT.

Sheikh Jamiu stated that laws that curb immoral decadence must be completely enforced.

He also advised parents not to expose their children to the social media at their younger age, while he also spoke against examination malpractices.

“People should run away from three things: indecency, aggression and wickedness. For a society to progress and develop, it must move away from what Allah kicks against.

“We must ensure that our society is free from all forms of moral decadence and we should be good examples to our children,” he said.

On his part, Sheikh Onikijipa said that almost everybody is corrupt in the society, adding that if the leaders are corrupt then it would be difficult to make the society better.

Sheikh Onikijipa stressed that leaders must be determined to end moral decadence in the society, while urging the lawmakers to make laws against all forms of moral decadence.

“See the way the government stopped the abuse of naira with necessary legislation. The same should be done for other moral decadence in the society.

“There is no religion if we don’t have morals. If you observed all the five pillars of the Islamic religion and you are morally corrupt, then you are deceiving yourself.

“If you pray regularly and you don’t have morals, then it is waste of time. Indecent dressing should be condemned in all places,’ he said.

The revered Islamic scholar then urged the lawmakers to make laws against indecent dressing, bad bloggers and internet fraudsters.

Speaking on the planned mass protests slated for next week, Sheikh Onikijipa called for prayers instead of protest, while making reference to the EndSARS protest of 2020, which he said was bloody.

Speaker Obasa said earlier in his welcome address that everyone has roles to play in achieving an upright society.

Obasa, who said that Hijrah is meant to celebrate the imams, urged them that the sermons they preach in the mosques should impact the people.

“You would be proud of the group you belong to when they feel your impact. We should ensure that we change our immediate environment and make things better on our time.

“We must all join hands to make our society better so that we can all have a morally upright society.

“It is not enough to make laws, people must exhibit good quality and there is need to work hand in hand with ourselves,” he said.
