Lagos Speaker Urges NUJ To Check Exploiters of Social Media

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa has said that there is need for members of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) to come up with measures that would checkmate the activities of those, who exploit the social media perpetuate evil as members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has a board that checkmates the bad eggs among them
Speaking to pressmen during the opening ceremony of a 4-day workshop organised for members of the Lagos State House of Assembly Correspondents Association (LAHACA) with the theme “Dynamics Of Digital Tools For Journalism Practice” at Marble Field Hotel, Oshodi, Lagos on Monday 2nd November, 2015, Obasa added it is something that journalists must work against.

“We cannot help without adequate legislation that can regulate social media, which I call exploiter or blackmailers because they are rampart, but I think the Lagos State House of Assembly can also come up with a legislation that will checkmate their activities and I also put it to you LAHACA members to come up with something that will be of help to us,” he said.

Obasa told the LAHACA members that they should be vigilant so that they could expose those, who want to tarnish the image of the profession through greed.

He revealed that he had been involved in the process of training the journalists in the Assembly behind the scene before he became the Speaker of the House, and expressed his gratitude to members of the association for their reportage of the activities of the Assembly.

“My doors are opened to you, we will continue to ask for more and we will improve on the things that would enhance your work. The world is now a global village as the whole thing is now computerised with ICT application.

“The journalism profession has adopted itself to the growing world of ICT, and we are committed to putting this kind of training programme in place,” he said.

In his response, the Chairman of LAHACA, Mr. Akinboye Akintola thanked the Speaker for promoting the tradition laid down by former Speaker Adeyemi Ikuforiji, adding that members of the association would continue to promote the activities of the Assembly through their reports.
