The Unconstitutional invasion Of The Home of Justice Mary Peter-Odili
The Rescue House condemns in the strongest terms the monstrous attack on the home of Justice Mary Peter Odili by a ‘joint taskforce’ that was carried out on the 28th of October 2021. This is the second time Justice Mary Peter-Odili is being attacked and we find it most abominable. The first Gestapo-styled invasion of my Lord’s home was carried out in 2016.
From all indications, it is safe to say that the Buhari regime has an unequalled detestation for the judiciary, to put mildly. It is high time the Buhari regime desisted from invading and attacking the homes of judges. What is more appalling is that this particular invasion, like its sister invasions, was not only done in the night, but was carried out via a purported search warrant that was fraudulently obtained. Well, we are not surprised. It is in this country and under regime that a Chief Judge of the Federation was removed via an “Ex Parte Motion”.
It is our considered position that the invasion is unconstitutional, a disparagement of the rule of law and gross bastardisation of the Nigerian legal ecosystem. It is a sad day to see Nigeria descend into the abyss. It is a loud and shameless step towards the complete annihilation of the independence of Nigeria’s judiciary – the supposed last hope of the common man.
We hold the considered view and respectfully so that this flagrant attack is a systematic violence on all [independent] institutions and brazen erosion of the rule of law in Nigeria. With this second wave of attack on the judiciary, it is safe to say that Nigeria is on a fast lane of no return to anarchy and complete system collapse. We further submit that an attack on the judiciary of any Country is an empirical evidence of a collapse state.
As we get closer to 2023, enduring the untold hardship oozing from the unpeopled policies of this regime, judicial officers in Nigeria must be allowed their freedom of thoughts and opinion in the determination of all cases before them. They must not be subjected to any form of intimidation and/or embarrassment, as done to Justice Mary Peter-Odili. No sane country with functional institution can survive without the protection of the.
The 1999 Constitution occupy a central position in Nigeria’s legal industry and must be allowed to operate in all its splendour. Therefore, save to state that the nature of Nigeria’s Constitution is made available so that lines are not crossed at will.
In any case, it does not lie in the mouth of this regime to say a judicial officer has erred. Hence, the Buhari regime cannot hold itself as the cleanser of the judiciary. Let us collectively rise to condemn this ignoble act of sacrilege, before it is too late.
In the light of the above Rescue House is calling on Nigerians, stakeholders and Party Leadership as a matter urgency and national concern, to put aside differences and agree on a way forward to revive Nigeria. It is without doubt that the All Progressive Congress came to kill, steal and destroy Nigeria beyond repair. Concerned Nigerians must rise to the occasion by fielding its best hands to rescue Nigeria from the heavily biased and divisive regime of this regime.
