N50bn Suit : EFCC Defeats Akwa Ibom State Government

The Akwa Ibom State has been floored by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)  in a suit it instituted against the commission with suit number FHC/UY/CS/137/2018.

The suit, which was instituted by the Akwa Ibom State Government through its Attorney General (AGF) claiming #50bn damages against the EFCC, was struck out based on the request of the state government.

The government backed out of the suit having reviewed the merit of their claim against the anti-graft agency.

The state government had sued EFCC seeking among others a reversal of an order of freezing the account of the state.

The EFCC, had through its counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo filed a statement of defense upon service of the statement of claim on the Commission, showing how the treasury of the state was looted and the proceeds of the stealing diverted to the account of a member of PAUL Usoro & Co law firm.

The EFCC, in its defence, also informed the court how the current President of the Nigerian Bar Association and PAUL Usoro and Co transferred N65 million naira to the personal account of the Attorney General of the state, Mr. Uwemedimo Thomas Nwoko.

On the receipt of the defence of the EFCC and at the resumed hearing of the matter recently for trial, the counsel to the Akwa State Government, Mr. Assam E Assam informed the court of its notice of discontinuance and prayed the court to strike the suit out.

The EFCC lawyer, Mr. Rotimi Oyedepo prayed the court to dismiss the suit and award cost of N1m.

Justice Fatun Odohi Riman struck out the suit  and awarded cost of N10,000 against the state government.
